Prague Sightseeing
Prague
is without doubt one of Europe's jewels. As a city that plays host to a
superb mix of architectural styles it has, at its heart, some of the most
striking Gothic and Baroque monuments in Europe. Largely unspoiled by the
ravages of time, Prague also emerged unscathed from a tumultuous 20th century.
Since 1989, and the fall of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe, millions
of tourists have flocked to the Czech Republic. With the romantic charm
of the city's Old Town (and a wealth of sightseeing opportunities), Prague
has become one of the world's most popular city break destinations.
Prague today, as it has been over the centuries, is a vibrant ever-evolving
city with a fine tradition for culture and the arts. Coupled with a thriving
social scene (and first-rate beer) visitors to Prague will find much to
enjoy here, both in terms of long-established traditions and events, but
also familiar reminders of home. Most of the places of interest are situated
in the wider center of the city and can be easily reached by foot. Besides,
the rich network of city transport (buses, trams and metro) represent an
inexpensive and usually comfortable option to travel within the city limits.
You can also consider taking advantage of one of the Prague cruise providers.
You will find their stalls and minibuses at several places in the center
(e.g. Wenceslas square or the Municipal House) or ask your hotel reception
for recommendation. You can also use the service of Prague Information Service
(PIS). Their offices can be found at: Na Prikope 20, Hlavní nádraí
(Main Railway Station) and the Old Town Hall.
Using a Prague (Matilda) Card
In keeping with other European capital cities, Prague provides a special
tourist card for visitors, with entry to most major attractions for a
significantly reduced rate. The Prague version, called the Matilda card
(Prague Card), is available for a fixed price of 690 CZK for adults and
560 CZK for children and students.
Also included is a 72 hour travel pass allowing unlimited travel on the
city's transport system (metro, bus, tram and funicular). The 72 hour
period begins from the time you first validate your ticket on any of the
four modes of transport.
The card can be purchased at city centre branches of American Express,
Prague Information Service offices (PIS) or Cedok (Na Príkope 18).

The
